Institute for Meteorological Training and Research (IMTR)

A Regional Centre of Excellence in Meteorology and Hydrology

The Institute for Meteorological Training and Research (IMTR) is a specialized branch of the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) under the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (ME&F). It is mandated to train personnel in meteorology, hydrology, and related geo-sciences for Kenya and other English-speaking (Anglophone) countries in Africa. Founded in 1964, the Institute was designated in 1965 as a World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Regional Training Centre (RTC) for Anglophone Africa, becoming part of an elite global network of just 23 WMO-RTCs, including only eight on the African continent.

Our Training Programs

IMTR offers:

  • Regular WMO-Certified Courses – Aligned with World Meteorological Organization (WMO) standards and frameworks.

  • Tailor-Made Courses – Customized to meet the specific training needs of institutions, countries, or professional groups.

All courses are delivered in English and designed to serve participants from across Anglophone Africa and beyond.

Training and Capacity Building at IMTR

Empowering Africa’s Climate and Weather Professionals

The Institute for Meteorological Training and Research (IMTR) has the infrastructure, expertise, and partnerships to organize and host specialized training courses, workshops, and seminars in a wide range of disciplines. These include meteorology, hydrology, environmental science, disaster management, and other geo-scientific fields.

Backed by a highly qualified team and strong collaborations with institutions locally, regionally, and internationally, IMTR delivers impactful, hands-on training that meets global standards. Oversight of all international matters relating to this partnership is led by the Permanent Representative (PR) of Kenya with WMO, ensuring alignment with global standards and strategic direction from WMO. The PR of Kenya with WMO, is the recognized channel of communication between WMO Secretariat, Geneva and Kenya on matters pertaining to Meteorology, including application, education and training, research and development.

WMO RTC–Nairobi: A Collaborative Structure

The WMO RTC–Nairobi, commonly referred to as IMTR, consists of two closely linked components:

  1. The Institute for Meteorological Training and Research (IMTR) — located within the Kenya Meteorological Department headquarters in Nairobi.

  2. The University of Nairobi, Department of Meteorology — based at the College of Biological and Physical Sciences, Chiromo Campus.

These two institutions work in close partnership to coordinate and deliver international training programs for WMO member states. This collaboration enables the training of meteorological and operational hydrology personnel at certificate, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels across English-speaking Africa.

Education and training in meteorology and related sciences to enhance capacities on meteorological services in the African Region.
